Vanavasi Kalyan Ashram is a non-profit organization which has branches all over India. It is a hostel for taking care of the tribal children.
A group of 40 students from grade 8 to grade 12 of Dr. Pillai Global Academy, New Panvel, visited Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram Chinchawali (10km away from the school) on 1st and 8th December, 2012.
On 1st December the students planted fruit trees including mango, chickoo, jackfruit and guava in the Ashram premises.
After the tree plantation there was an informal interaction with the hostelites. Mr. Dileep Pawra, who is the care taker at the hostel, introduced us to the tribal students and to their needs and requirements. The greatest need there is of water and during summer the water shortage becomes acute. The students at the Ashram channel used water to the plants so that the plants are watered even in summer. DPGA students distributed snacks to the hostel inmates. They also were introduced to the state level marathon runner who is a student there.
On 8th December our students under the guidance of Art teachers Ms. Aparna and Ms. Deepali conducted a drawing competition for the tribal students. It was heartening to see the our students conversing effectively with the hostilities in their local language. After an hour of drawing the students of DPGA organised some fun games which were enjoyed by one and all. Mr. Pravin Kulkarni, a staff member of DPGA taught Bhajans to the students.
The students thoroughly enjoyed the interaction and are looking forward eagerly to the next visit at Vanavasi Kalyan Ashram.
