Wildlife Photographer Awards
Heartiest Congratulations Ms. Aishwarya Sridhar
This year marks a milestone for Indian wildlife photography as Aishwarya Sridhar, alumnus of Dr. Pillai Global Academy, New Panvel bagged an award in the adult competition – making her the youngest and the first girl to win the coveted award from India.
Wildlife Photographer of the Year awards were announced on 14th October, 2020 by the Natural History Museum, London. Established as the most reputed awards in the genre of wildlife photography, it witnessed over 50,000 entries coming from over 80 countries this year and only 100 images were awarded.
Aishwarya received the Highly Commended Award in the Behaviour-Invertebrates Category for her entry titled ’Lights of Passion’. The breath-taking photograph was captured using the Canon 1DX Mark II and Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 lens at 24mm; 24 sec at f2.8; ISO 1000. Although the leopard-frequented forest could be ‘terrifying’, it was the perfect place for Aishwarya to look for fireflies. After two hours of hiking, she found a tree dusted in gold from the bioluminescence of thousands of fireflies. Shooting 27 images over a 24-second exposure and combining them using focus stacking software, she highlighted the vibrancy of this scene.
Fireflies are a type of winged beetle that use light to lure potential mates. Of the many species, each has a distinct pattern and intensity of light in order to recognise its own kind. Fireflies are affected globally by habitat destruction and light pollution, which can make them lose track of time and position, disrupt their mating or even blind them.
The DPGA family wishes Ms. Aishwarya all the very best for her future endevours
